about

Dark Age Of Reason:

The follow up companion to "Heartache Is A Four Letter Word" is a five track EP comprised of the darker, more brooding compositions written by Schneider. These songs were fleshed out with the help of his wife Elizabeth and mandolinist Mark Connolly. "Take Aim," the first track on "Dark Age Of Reason," was actually written on the same day as "Heartache Is A Four Letter Word," and speaks from a different part of Schneider's writing.

These two EPs are meant to be looked upon as one complete work. They showcase the full spectrum of Aquariums' material from the softer finger-picking folk to what Schneider refers to as the brooding Noir-Folk compositions. While both "Heartache" and "Dark Age" stand alone as complete works, together they give a more complete picture of the emotion and content driving Schneider's writing.

In much the same way as it's companion piece, the performances on "Dark Age Of Reason" have been left complete and unedited to preserve the spirit of the take. At least philosophically this sets these two EPs apart from most modern recordings that are relentlessly deprived of all life through "comping" and the desire to make everything perfect. We live in an imperfect world and part of what it is to be human is to err.

Track Name: Take Aim
Take aim
Take aim
Before they try to take it all
Away

Take aim
Take aim
Before they try to make us all
The same

Before they try to place the blame
Before its too late
Before the targets out of range
Take aim

The strange
The strange
The strangest thing happened
Today

Today
Today
The wolf did become prey
Today

The oxen he did bray
The sheep did run away
With the wolf into the haze
Today

Captain
Captain
At their wits end are
The men

Captain
Captain
Mutiny is imminent

We've followed you blindly
for two years and a day
No more shall you remain
Captain

Thrown in
Thrown in
Overboard the Captain's
Sinkin'

Sinkin'
Sinkin'
Never to surface
Again

The course is set for home
No more shall we roam
The seas aimlessly blown
By the wind
Track Name: My Light
Lay your body next to mine
Leave the light on by the stairs
Our hearts match up pulsing in time
how could you not be aware that

You are to me the light by which I'm guided and see
You ought to know how much I love you. Oh babe I need you so

Let your loving wash over me
Cleansing every bit of my soul
The bitterness and pain are debris
That lie in scars from long ago

You are to me the light by which I'm guided and see
You ought to know how much I love you. Oh babe I need you so

A flash of light in the sky
The crash of thunder from below
I saw the whites of your eyes
Shift from brown to gold

You are to me the light by which I'm guided and see
You ought to know how much I love you. Oh babe I need you so
Track Name: Pick Up The Pace
Pick up the pace
Pick up the pace
There's something coming soon and like to moon its hurtling through space

Paint on a face
Paint on a face
To conceal your real and frightened frail features behind a veil of lace

Smell it on the breeze
Smell it on the breeze
As the wind does plough and buckles boughs and bends the breaking branches of the trees

Salvation's within reach
Salvation's within reach
Though it may exceed your grasp just gasp and breathe a sigh of relief
Track Name: The River
I went down to the river
And her waters they beckoned me in
Saying come with us son and ride 'neath the tide and never be thirsty again

I waded into the water
Till the water was up to my chin
Swept away in the current no telling what's round the bend
For the river runs free down the mountains to the sea and it seemed to me without end

Let it roll
Oh Lord, let me roll
on down to the sea
Take me tide and bear me high o'er the crest of time to eternity

Then I came to a forrest
And the trees they beckoned me in
Saying stay with us son and take shelter in our shade and you'll never go hungry again

Shattering silence around me
The echoing voices of men
Calling to me from the mountain peaks offer their guiding hand
If you search you will find if you ask in due time the answer you seek will be given

Let it roll
Oh Lord, let me roll
on down to the sea
Take me tide and bear me high o'er the crest of time to eternity
Track Name: Dark Of The Day
Stranger things have been known to occur
The warning the swallow brings
Concerns the house of your honor

A cold wind blows from the East
Stripping all the trees of their leaves
No comfort no relief

Board the windows and the doors
Take shelter and wait for it to pass
Try to weather the storm
Try not to worry about the past

And shield your face from the night
As the storm comes rolling in
Sky was cut apart by lightning
And the roar of the wind

Restless waking eyes
Wishing you could dream
Without a star in the sky
How small does the universe seem?

Remember how it used to be
Remember that it comes in threes
Remember the heat

How the tides have changed
To years of famine from feast
In the end those who remain
Left to pick it up piece by piece

The sun is setting now in the East
The warmth it brings don't help in the least
And the cold wind doesn't cease

Dull diffused light
Blood red gleam of the dawn
Left confused by its sight
Been staring at the sun too long

To shield your face from the night
As the storm comes rolling in
Sky was cut apart by lightning
And the roar of the wind
